Seit dem Wahlsieg von Hugo Chávez 1998 und der Ausrufung der "bolivarischen Republik" verfolgt das mit reichen Ölvorräten ausgestattete Land innenpolitisch eine anti-neoliberalistische Politik mit beeindruckenden Sozialprogrammen und einer betont anti-US-amerikanischen, an Kuba orientierten Außenpolitik. Damit ist das früher durch Oligarchien regierte Land plötzlich Vorreiter für eine Umwälzung wie nicht mehr seit dem Chile Allendes und wird zunehmend auch bei uns wahrgenommen, was sich z.B. in etlichen Publikationen niederschlägt, darunter "Venezuela - Die bolivarische Republik" (ID 22/05), "Aló Presidente" (ID 26/04) und R. Zelik "Made in Venezuela" (ID 26/04). Fürntratt-Kloep schildert detailliert die Politik Chávez' und die Instrumente, mit denen dieser gegen Armut und den Kapitalismus kämpft und natürlich auch seine Macht absichert. Er schildert dies aus einer klaren anti-kapitalistischen Sicht, stellt Chávez in eine Reihe mit Lenin und Fidel Castro, verschweigt aber auch einige Probleme der bolivarischen Revolution nicht.
