Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928) war politische Aktivistin und Kopf der britischen Suffragettenbewegung, die sich für das Frauenwahlrecht einsetzte. 1914 veröffentlichte sie ihre Autobiografie, deren Übersetzung erschien 1996 unter dem Titel "Ein Leben für die Rechte der Frauen" (hier nicht besprochen) und wurde für diese Ausgabe gründlich überarbeitet. Pankhurst, die als 14-Jährige erstmals eine Versammlung zum Frauenwahlrecht besuchte, stellt ihren Werdegang zur militanten Frauenrechtlerin und die Entwicklung der Suffragettenbewegung in den Mittelpunkt. Sie beschreibt, wie der politische Kampf der Frauenbewegung immer radikaler wurden und auf welchen, oft brutalen, Widerstand die Frauen trafen. Dieses anschaulich geschriebene Buch, das ein parteiliches Bild des Engagements der Suffragetten zeichnet, trägt zum Verständnis für die Ziele und Methoden der Frauenrechtsbewegung Anfang des 20.
