In seiner Forschung beschäftigt sich Reinhard Heinisch mit dem Populismus, den politischen Parteien und der Demokratie. Von 2011 bis 2018 war Reinhard Heinisch Leiter der Arbeitsgruppe Demokratie der Österreichischen Forschungsgemeinschaft. Neben einer regen internationalen Publikations-, Vortrags-, und Lehrtätigkeit fungierte er als Konsulent für Organisationen und Regierungsstellen und betätigt sich als Gastkommentator in nationalen und internationalen Medien. Reinhard Heinisch ist Träger des Wissenschaftspreises des M. Lupac-Stiftung des österreichischen Parlaments.

Das "Salzburger Jahrbuch für Politik" erschien zum ersten Mal 1999. Herausgegeben vom Politikwissenschafter Herbert Dachs und vom Leiter des Salzburger Landespressebüros Roland Floimair leistete es für Österreich Pionierarbeit, indem hier über zwei Jahrzehnte hinweg im Zwei-Jahres-Rhythmus eine regelmäßige, systematische, wissenschaftlich fundierte und dabei allgemein verständlich formulierte Bestandsaufnahme der gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen und der Politik eines Bundeslandes erfolgte. Andere Bundesländer (Burgenland, Kärnten, Steiermark, Tirol, Vorarlberg, Wien) folgten dem Salzburger Beispiel und brachten eigene Jahrbücher heraus, was die Einstellung des Projektes 2010 umso bedauerlicher erscheinen lässt.Ausgehend von der Überlegung, dass regionale (und lokale) Politik trotz zunehmender Globalisierung und europäischer Integration nach wie vor - nicht zuletzt als identitätsstiftender Faktor - ihre Bedeutung hat, wurde 2017 ein neuer Anlauf gestartet, das "Salzburger Jahrbuch für Politik" wiederzubeleben.
