TON-U „Pourquoi“ ist eine Komposition von Philip Catherine, die der zweiten Studiobegegnung mit seinem Gitarrenkollegen Paul Morello und seinem Bassisten Sven Faller seinen Namen gab. Ein „Pourquoi“, das ohne Fragezeichen geschrieben ist. Ein kleines Wortspiel des Jazzgitarren-Meisters Philip Catherine. Eine lebende, junggebliebene Jazzlegende, die 2022 80 Jahre alt wird. Ein Musiker, der in Belgien, dem kleinen Land mit der großen Jazzszene, als Nationalheld geschätzt wird. Die drei Top-Künstler performen nahezu selbstverständlich fließend, stilsicher durch alle Genres, mal temperamentvoll swingend, mal nachdenklich und verdichtet wie eine Filmmusik. Sie haben ein Zusammenspiel von kammermusikalischer Qualität entwickelt, billige „Gitarrenschlachten“ vermieden, sich auf ständiges Zuhören und Reagieren konzentriert und durch Fallers Kontrabass mit sicherem Puls und kanonartigen Gegenmelodien ergänzt. Während auf dem Debütalbum die Bewunderung des Trios für Django Reinhardt, Antonio Carlos Jobim und jazzige Interpretationen französischer Chansons der 50er und 60er Jahre im Mittelpunkt standen, rückt „Pourquoi“ Eigenkompositionen in den Mittelpunkt. Mit Ausnahme von „First Waltz“ des belgischen Filmkomponisten Frédéric Devreese (1929–2020) und dem mediterran anmutenden „Frontera“ von Nicola Andrioli stammt das Repertoire von „Pourquoi“ aus der Feder von Catherine und Morello. Die Musik dieses Trios beherrscht die Kunst, Orte, Personen und Stimmungen so intensiv heraufzubeschwören, dass sie einem plötzlich vertraut werden, auch wenn man noch nie den Wein im „Chateau Plagne“ gekostet oder „Louisella“ begegnet ist.
