Die ganze Welt kennt Alfred Nobel (1833-96), den schwedischen Chemiker und Industriellen, durch dessen Stiftung alljährlich die berühmten Nobelpreise verliehen werden. Der geniale Wissenschaftler wurde durch die Erfindung des Dynamits, der "Sprenggelatine" und des rauchfreien Pulvers (Ballistit) zu einem der wohlhabendsten Männer im Europa des 19. Jahrhunderts. Diese neue und sehr einfühlsam geschriebene Biographie befaßt sich mit dem Menschen Alfred Nobel, der als Privatmann ein unglückliches Leben führte und sich der wenig segensreichen Folgen seiner Erfindung für die Menschheit wohl bewußt war. Zur Erforschung der rätselhaften Persönlichkeit Nobels hat der Autor vor allen Dingen dessen Privatkorrespondenz (darunter auch neu ausgewertete Briefe) und das bislang wenig bekannte literarische Werk des Wissenschaftlers herangezogen, das durchaus autobiographische Elemente enthält. Sehr empfehlenswert, weil ausführlicher und aktueller als die Biographien von F. Vögtle (BA 10/83) und R. Wünnenberg (BA 294, 95). (2) (Heidi Debschütz)
