Noch einmal greift der Araberscheich Abu in das Leben von Alec Ramsey ein. Ein Brief meldet Alec seinen Tod. Aber der große Freund hat ihm Blitz, den herrlichen Hengst, vermacht. Blitz wird zu ihm zurückkehren! Alec jubelt. Gewiß, Vulkan, der stolze Sohn von Blitz, ist ein großartiges Pferd. Hat es nicht die drei bedeutendsten Rennen Amerikas gewonnen? Aber Alecs Herz hängt an Blitz, der ihm einst das Leben rettete, der nur ihm seine Liebe schenkte. Er macht Pläne, wie er Blitz auf die Farm bringen wird, die der Vater kürzlich erwarb und die sie nun zu einem Gestüt ausbauen werden! Aber es kommt ganz anders. Die Presse hat von Blitz' Rückkehr erfahren. Schon heißt's: Blitz und Vulkan, Vater und Sohn, sollen ihre Kräfte messen, sollen zeigen, wer das schnellste Pferd der Welt ist. Schließlich gibt Alec dem Drängen nach und meldet seine beiden Pferde für ein großes internationales Rennen. Wird alles gutgehen? Wird Blitz sich wieder von Alec meistern lassen oder - das Wildpferd, das er ist - die anderen Hengste angreifen? Da erkrankt im Trainingslager eines der fremden Pferde an einer todbringenden Seuche, das Rennen wird abgesagt, alle anderen Pferde werden zwecks sechswöchiger Quarantäne auf eine entfernte Farm verbracht. Bange Wochen für Alec, bis er gewiß ist, dass Blitz und Vulkan gesund blieben. Doch schon droht neue Gefahr! Ein Waldbrand bricht aus, nähert sich rasend den Stallungen! In letzter Minute gelingt es Alec auf Blitz, eine Schneise durch den Wald zu finden und die anderen Pferde hineinzutreiben. Hier wird nun das große Rennen doch noch ausgetragen, mit den heranheulenden Flammen als Starter! Wer wird Sieger sein?
