Walter Jacob nach siebzehn Jahren des Exils 1950 das Amt des Intendanten der Städtischen Bühnen Dortmund. Diktatur und Krieg hatten die deutsche Gesellschaft und mit ihr die Theaterlandschaft stark verändert, so dass er manche seiner Vorstellungen in der konkreten Arbeit revidieren und sich unterschiedlichsten Konflikten stellen musste. Anhand ausgewählter Themen spannt die vorliegende Studie einen weiten Bogen, in dem die Vorbereitung der Remigration, die Umstände von Jacobs Wahl und die Auseinandersetzungen um seine Stellung als Intendant, Fragen des Theaterkonzepts sowie der Wiedergutmachung betrachtet werden. Gleichsam nebenher ergibt sich ein Bild von der Nachkriegsgesellschaft in Westdeutschland, von den Arbeitsbedingungen in einer kriegszerstörten Stadt sowie vom Theaterbetrieb und seinen Verflechtungen mit städtischer Verwaltung und Presse. Deutlich werden auch der nach wie vor virulente Antisemitismus und die Mechanismen des Verschweigens der jüngsten Geschichte.
