Es stellt sich die Frage, ob öffentliche Schulen sie mit jenen Kompetenzen ausstatten, die sie morgen benötigen werden, um gemeinsam Europa zu gestalten. Der Bildungs- und Berufsraum Europa ist durch die Vielfalt seiner Kulturen und Sprachen gekennzeichnet. Dies erfordert Schulen, in denen Schüler von Anfang an in zwei Sprachen lernen, einander kulturell begegnen und ohne Überforderung zu mehrsprachigen Schulabschlüssen geführt werden. In diesem Band werden Schulprojekte vorgestellt, in denen Schüler einer Sprachminderheit zusammen mit Schülern der Mehrheit erfolgreich dieses Ziel erlangen. Ferner stellen Experten weiterführende Erkenntnisse zur Spracherwerbsforschung, zum frühen Sprachenlernen sowie zum Sprachunterricht in Deutschland, Italien, Spanien und Griechenland vor. Daraus abzuleitende Empfehlungen zur Bildungspolitik und Schulentwicklung werden in einem Memorandum zur Einrichtung von bilingual-mehrsprachigen Europaschulen zusammengefasst.
