    Content: Dies ist die erste zweisprachige Ausgabe der kompletten Vulgata mit deutscher Übersetzung. Bei der Vulgata handelt es sich um die seit der Spätantike am weitesten verbreitete lateinische Übersetzung der Bibel, die ca. 380–400 von Hieronymus erstellt wurde und als das Zentralwerk der europäischen Geistes- und Theologiegeschichte gelten kann. Da sie in entscheidenden Teilen von den Originalbibeltexten abweicht, bietet sie einen wichtigen Einblick in die christliche Theologie der Spätantike, des Mittelalters und der frühen Neuzeit. Die Römisch-Katholische Kirche hat Hieronymus’ lateinische Übersetzung über Jahrhunderte als maßgebende Version der Heiligen Schrift angesehen und als Quelle verwendet. Der lateinische Originaltext der Vulgata folgt der heute maßgeblichen 5. Auflage der Ausgabe von Robert Weber und Roger Gryson. Die deutsche Übersetzung wird völlig neu erstellt von einem Team namhafter Klassischer Philologen und Theologen, das durch einen interdisziplinären theologisch-philologischen Beirat unterstützt wird. Die Koordination und die Auswahl der Übersetzer und des Beirats übernahm der in Chur, Schweiz, ansässige Vulgata-Verein. Ziel des Übersetzungsprojekts ist es, Hieronymus’ Sprache und Interpretation der Bibel unabhängig von der theologischen Übersetzungstradition mit all ihren Abweichungen von den hebräischen und griechischen Originaltexten herauszuarbeiten. Es entsteht so eine Übersetzung, die wissenschaftlich höchsten Ansprüchen genügt und ein Standardwerk sowohl für Klassische Philologen als auch für Theologen darstellt. Das Werk umfasst ca. 4500 Seiten in 5 Bänden. Zielgruppe sind Bibliotheken und theologische Institutionen, aber auch Einzelkäufer mit theologischem, altphilologischem oder kulturgeschichtlichem Interesse, vor allem auch Studenten und Dozenten der Klassischen Philologie und Theologie.

    Content: Abram to Abraham explores the Abraham saga (11:27-22:24) through a literary lens, following the legendary figure of Abraham as he navigates the arduous odyssey to nationhood. Rather than overlook the textual discrepancies, repetitions and contradictions long noted by diachronic scholars, this study tackles them directly, demonstrating how many problems of the ancient text in fact hold the key to deeper understanding of the narrative and its objectives. Therefore, the book frequently notes the classic division of the text according to primary sources, but offers an alternative, more harmonious reading based on the assumption that the narrative forms a single, intentionally designed unit. The narrative’s artistic design is especially evident in its arrangement of the two halves of the story around the protagonists’ change of name. The stories of Abram and Sarai in the first half of the cycle (11:27-16:16) are parallel to the stories of Abraham and Sarah in the second half (18:1-22:24). A close reading of this transformation in the biblical narrative illuminates the moral and theological values championed by the figure of Abraham as luminary, soldier, family man, and loyal subject of God.

    Content: What is the most important lesson in the word of God? In Matt. 22:34-40, Jesus summarizes the whole Bible into two commandments, being ‘love for God’ and ‘love for thy neighbor’ (Lev. 19:18). Why did Jesus cite Lev. 19:18 (love) instead of 19:2 (holiness), which is the core of this chapter? This book analyzes how Lev. 19 is unfolded from OT times to the message of the NT. It attempts to prove the importance of Lev. 19 in the canonical tradition of Judaism and Christianity and to identify the clues which can help to explain the reason why Jesus chose Lev. 19:18. Further, the book shows that holiness, one of the main issues in Lev. 19, is replaced by perfection in Matt. 5:48. This connection is shown through examining the Community Rule (1QS) of the Dead Sea Scrolls, which joins the themes of holiness and perfection. This combination serves as the ‘missing link’ to bridge the gap between Lev. 19 and Matt. 5. The method used to explore these texts is called ‘a canonical unfolding.’ After a commentary on Lev. 19 the chapter is compared to other connected texts. Finally, the meaning of Lev. 19 is reinterpreted in the whole context of the Canon.

    Content: The prophecy of Zephaniah is a compendium of prophetic thoughts on the nature of YHWH’s relationship with His people.
