Kaiser Heinrich II. hatte kurz nach seiner Kaiserkrönung 1014 den Auftrag zum Neubau der Kathedrale in seiner Lieblingspfalz Merseburg gegeben. Die Baugestalt und Ausstattung des Domes wurde besonders durch die Ereignisse des Investiturstreits im ausgehenden 11. Jahrhundert geprägt, als der Gegenkönig Heinrichs IV., Rudolf von Rheinfelden, im Dom prachtvoll bestattet wurde. Erlesene Kunstschätze aus europäischen Sammlungen beleuchten in Ausstellung und Katalog die grosse Kaisertradition Merseburgs und seiner Kathedrale, vor allem die Verehrung des heiligen Kaiserpaares Heinrich II. und Kunigunde. Zum Jubiläum wird die Grabkapelle Bischof Sigismunds von Lindenau mit ihrem bedeutenden Cranachaltar wiedererstehen. Sie belegt in ihrer Heinrichsverehrung die Erinnerung an die königlichen Zeiten Merseburgs und ist in ihrer Ikonographie ein Monument des reichsunmittelbaren Bistums Merseburg. 0Exhibition: Merseburger Dom, Merseburg, Germany (10.08-09.11.2015)
