In der Längsschnittstudie wird die Entwicklung von Kindern untersucht, die bereits mit fünf Jahren „vorvorzeitig“ eingeschult werden. Dazu werden die Entwicklungsbedingungen und Lernvoraussetzungen dieser besonders jungen Kinder erhoben, ihre Entwicklung während der Grundschulzeit aufgezeigt und schließlich Aussagen über deren Schulerfolg am Ende der Grundschulzeit getroffen. Insgesamt ergibt sich für die Untersuchung ein Projektzeitraum von fast zehn Jahren. Die vorliegende Studie befasst sich mit einem Thema, das in der schulischen Praxis sowie in der Grundschulpädagogik eine bedeutsame Rolle spielt, zu dem aber bisher kaum bzw. begrenzt empirische Befunde vorliegen. Auf der Basis des ökosystemischen Schulreifemodells von Nickel (1988) wird der Prozess der vorvorzeitigen Einschulung theoriegeleitet untersucht. Grundlage für das Design der Arbeit ist eine breite Prozessdiagnostik, bei der vielfältige Datenquellen (Tests, Beobachtungen und Einschätzungen von Familie, Kindergarten, Arzt, Schule, Schulpsychologe) eingesetzt wurden. In der Gesamtschau sind die vorvorzeitig eingeschulten Kinder der Studie recht erfolgreich. Eine vorvorzeitige Einschulung kann sinnvoll sein, wenn sie im Rahmen einer breit angelegten Schuleingangsdiagnostik erfolgt und auf einer von Eltern, Schule und Kindergarten gemeinsam getragenen und sorgsam überlegten Entscheidung beruht.
