Content: Abbas Khider (b. 1973) has established himself as one of the leading literary voices of refugees and marginalised communities in Germany today. Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Khider was at a young age a vocal critic of Saddam Hussein's regime, during which he was jailed and tortured before fleeing the country. As a refugee, he crossed many countries before arriving in Germany, where he was eventually granted asylum. His own life experiences have served as a departure point for his novels, which similarly explore the refugee experience and the challenges that migrants to Europe face. This volume represents the first collection of essays devoted to Khider's works to date. The contributions analyse his narrative works and probe important questions relating to political, cultural, and linguistic identity in Germany today. While his works explore what it means to be an immigrant, they do so with a wry sense of humour and an insight into the human condition that also reflect on the political situation in Germany today. His award-winning novels, including Der falsche Inder (2008, The Village Indian, 2013) and Ohrfeige (2016, A Slap in the Face, 2019), which have been translated into English, are discussed in detail. Additionally, an original interview with the author offers insight into his writing process and influences.
Content: «Almost two decades into the US War in Iraq and the change of Saddam Hussein's regime, this timely and rich collection of essays offers a multi-faceted examination of the works of the Iraqi-German author Abbas Khider, one of the rising stars in German literature today. Contextualizing Khider's novels and non-fictional works in post-9/11 Islamophobia, seen especially in the wake of arrival of over a million refugees in Germany since 2015, Coury and Machtans have brought together a diverse set of voices that revisit many essential questions concerning the multilingual register of German «national» literature in the twenty-first century through filters of migration, politics, and religion. With an illuminating Introduction framing the thoughtful essays, this volume will be of interest to readers of Khider in German and English, contemporary European literature, as well as scholars of Migration and Refugee Studies. The book would also serve as an excellent sourcebook for teaching Khider.» (B. Venkat Mani (Professor of German, University of Wisconsin-Madison), author of Cosmopolitical Claims and Recoding World Literature)

Series Statement: Leeds-Swansea Colloquia on Contemporary German Literature 3
Content: In the year that Europe commemorates the centenary of the outbreak of World War I and the European Union faces a crisis of legitimacy, the national question is once again being posed across the Continent. This volume assesses how contemporary German-language writers and filmmakers have approached this troubled question over the last decade. It addresses whether the collective entity known as Germany should more properly be conflated with the Federal Republic, with its successful sixty-five-year history (‘the best Germany we have ever had’), rather than the ‘nation’ with all its tainted connotations and corrupted concepts such as ‘Vaterland’. Contemporary Germany is a product not only of its history up to 1945 but also of the process of understanding that history and acting upon that understanding since the defeat of National Socialism. Each of the sixteen essays collected here illuminates a different segment of a bigger picture, whose shape and shades are themselves evolving. Presented as a whole their purpose is to provoke further discussion among observers of the contemporary German-speaking scene.
Content: «The diversity of genres and perspectives discussed makes the volume as a whole a convincing and inspiring read for students and academics alike.» (Ute Wölfel, Modern Language Review, Vol. 110, 2015)

Content: Ilija Trojanow, born in Bulgaria in 1965 and brought up in East Africa, established his name as an international writer with the novel Der Weltensammler or The Collector of Worlds (2006), about the cross-cultural Victorian adventurer Sir Richard Francis Burton. Since the mid-1990s Trojanow has been prolific in a number of genres, including travel, ethnography and science fiction. He has also become a major public intellectual in Austria and Germany with provocative interventions on topics such as Islam and the West, civil rights in the age of cybersurveillance and climate change. His imaginative writing sits at the centre of a number of defining contemporary concerns, in particular the relationship between identity, language and culture. This volume contains an interview with Trojanow, a previously unpublished essay by him on Lessing’s Enlightenment parable of inter-religious tolerance, Nathan der Weise (Nathan the Wise), and essays by European and North American scholars on central aspects of his growing œuvre. The contributors explore why Trojanow is one of today’s leading writers of German while challenging a number of myths that have grown up around him and his magnum opus, Der Weltensammler.
(Frank Riedel, literaturkritik.de 02/2014) «This is a very good volume, which will be of great use to scholars and students alike. It is tightly edited, well conceived, and does a great service in making this important writer better known to readers and academics in the anglophone world.» (Sabine Wilke, Gegenwartsliteratur 16/2016) «[...] this volume is a valuable and important resource for future research on Trojanow and opens possible new approaches to this by now well-known and often provocative writer and intellectual.» (Sandra Vlasta, Austrian Studies, Volume 24/2016)

Content: In German-speaking Europe, as in other parts of the western world, questions of religious identity have been discussed with sudden urgency since the attacks of ‘9/11’. Nowhere was this clearer than in the heated controversy over the building of a mosque in the city of Cologne, which is the subject of Michael Hofmann’s contribution to this volume. Turkish Germans have also found themselves defined by the religious background of their parents. For different reasons German Jews have faced pressure to reconnect with a religion that their forbears cast off sometimes more than a century ago. At the same time religious belief among the nominally Christian majority has been in retreat. These changes have generated poetry, drama, and fiction as well as a number of films by both well-known and emerging authors and filmmakers. Their works sometimes reflect but more often challenge debates taking place in politics and the media. The essays in this volume explore a range of genres which engage with religion in contemporary Germany and Austria. They show that literature and film express nuances of feeling and attitude that are eclipsed in other, more immediately influential discourses. Discussion of these works is thus essential for an understanding of the role of religion in forming identity in contemporary multicultural German-speaking societies. This volume contains eight chapters in English and six in German.
