Deutsche Schriftsteller der Nachkriegszeit sind nicht nur von einer Tabula rasa ausgegangen, sondern sie haben auch und vor allem der neuen deutschen Literatur, die wie einst im "Sturm und Drang" zu regenerieren sei, die Aufgabe zugeschrieben, gegen angeblich falsche und für angeblich bessere politische oder soziale Werte und Zustände einzutreten. Sie folgen hierbei Jean-Paul Sartres Konzept des Engagements, dem zufolge allein die Poesie von Entscheidungen für oder gegen etwas freigestellt ist. Wegweisende Manifeste sind von Hans Werner Richter und Alfred Andersch in den Jahren 1947 und 1948 verfasst worden. Die literaturtheoretischen oder poetologischen Äußerungen und Überlegungen deutscher Schriftsteller aus den folgenden Jahrzehnten variieren, differenzieren und bestätigen diese frühen Weisungen; aus der Perspektive eines vermeintlich vordringlichen Gemeinsinns wird Becketts Schreibweise als wenig empfehlenswertes "Endspielspiel" (Martin Walser) beiseite geschoben. Aus deutscher Perspektive wurde Becketts Eigensinn als "makabre Philosophie", als Nihilismus, der "jeden Gestaltungsversuch" lähmt, kurzum als "dunkles Gelalle" (Werner Fiedler, in: "Der Tag", 2. 10. 1957) wahrgenommen. Allein Wolfgang Hildesheimer hat sich eindringlich auf Becketts Schreibweise eingelassen und scheint unter anderem die Erkenntnis daraus gewonnen zu haben, dass es nicht die Funktion der Literatur sei, "Wahrheit zu Fiktion, sondern Fiktion zu Wahrheit" zu machen; als er "Tynset" (1965), einen Monolog aus fragmentarischen Erinnerungen - also in durchaus Beckettscher Schreibweise -, veröffentlicht, erkennt einer seiner Kollegen, Reinhard Baumgart, in den "tief empfundenen Seufzern über das Sinnlose an Gott und Welt, Leben und Tod" nur "Weltschmerz-Rhetorik" und vermisst vor allem die eindeutige Trennung "zwischen der Wahrheit des Berichts oder Tagebuchs und der anderen Wahrheit des Erfindens und Erzählens": Es fällt nicht leicht, die vielfältig gemeinsinnigen Einsichten einer konsequent eigensinnigen Erfahrung und Schreibweise zu erkennen. Der in dem Sammelband "Der unbekannte Beckett" publizierte Beitrag ist überarbeitet, um einige Seiten erweitert und um eine englische Übersetzung ergänzt worden.
