Konrad Kellen, ein Sohn des Berliner Fabrikanten Ludwig Katzenellenbogen, ging Anfang 1933 in die Emigration. Nach Aufenthalten in Frankreich, Jugoslawien und Holland wanderte er im Herbst 1935 nach New York aus, wo er sich mit kleinen Jobs durchschlug. 1940 übersiedelte er nach Santa Monica, Kalifornien. Kurz darauf wurde er der persönliche Sekretär von Thomas Mann in Pacific Palisades. Er tippte dessen Briefe, Reden und Manuskripte, darunter der Roman Joseph der Ernährer, und wurde einer der engsten Vertrauten des Schriftstellers. Seine Aufzeichnungen spiegeln ein abenteuerliches Emigrantenleben, mit vielen unfreiwilligen Wechseln und Brüchen. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Erinnerungen an Thomas Mann: eine einzigartige Nahaufnahme des Zauberers, geschrieben aus der Erfahrung der täglichen gemeinsamen Arbeit. Ergänzt wird Kellens Autobiographie durch Texte, in denen die Herausgeber seinen Lebensweg und seine Familiengeschichte schildern und über die Entstehung des Buches berichten.
