Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts ist mit Schlüsselwerken wie Pierrot Lunaire von Arnold Schönberg oder Die Geschichte vom Soldaten von Igor Stravinskij eine neue Form von Kompositionen für individuell zusammengesetzte Ensembles entstanden, die sich in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts zu einer eigenständigen Gattung weiterentwickelt hat.Mit der Gründung des Ensemble Modern 1980 in Frankfurt entstand ein exemplarischer Klangkörper, der die Gattung Ensemblemusik zu höchster interpretatorischer Qualität geführt hat. Neben diesem heute weltweit renommierten und aktiven Ensemble wurden in den letzten Jahrzehnten allein in Deutschland über 150 weitere Ensembles für Neue Musik gegründet. Eine Studie des Instituts für kulturelle Innovationsforschung an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg hat die musikalische Entwicklung dieser Ensembles sowie ihre wirtschaftliche und organisatorische Struktur untersucht.
