Die von vielfältigen Erinnerungen und Emotionen durchdrungenen Hände bearbeiten die Zeitungsseiten, die Hände zerreißen und fügen neu zusammen, die Hände erschaffen die Papiers maroufflés, die verleimten Papiere. Der heute 86-jährige Maler zerreißt Zeitungsseiten, um die Fetzen durch mehrfache Fotokopien zu verkleinern oder monumental zu vergrößern, die Wörter bis zur Unkenntlichkeit zu verändern. "Er rückt die Schrift in eine andere Dimension: ins Malerische" sagt der Kunstwissenschaftler Andreas Haus. Seine granitschwarzen bis graupelweißen Großformate haben kein Zentrum, keinen Rand, kein Oben oder Unten. Von ihrem Rohstoff, einem Meer beliebig ausgestreuter, zerstückelter Buchstaben, bleiben nur Formen und Muster zurück. In einem Interview mit Klaus Dermutz spricht Max Wechsler über sein Exil in Paris, sein Werk und seine persönliche Geschichte.
