Der Leitgedanke dieser Publikation ist die komplexe Frage nach der nationalen, kulturellen und persönlichen Identität. Welche Identitätsmodelle werden angeboten? Wie bildet sich die Identität im Spannungsfeld des Anderen und inwiefern ist das Andere bei der Herauskristallisierung der Identität notwendig? Bei einzelnen Fragestellungen zu Identität und Alterität geht es um eine Erforschung der Wechselbeziehung, die sich sowohl bei der Wahrnehmung von Fremdheit bzw. Anderssein manifestiert, als auch von Strategien der individuellen und kollektiven Selbstbestimmung beeinflusst wird. Die Studie diskutiert Identität und Alterität aus literatur- und kulturgeschichtlicher Sicht anhand von Künstlerbiographien, nationalen und kulturellen Symbolen, der Erfahrung von Heimat und Migration, der Wahrnehmung deutsch-polnischer Grenzregionen bis hin zu Sciencefiction-Inszenierungen und zeigt, dass Identität als Begriff sowohl für literatur- und kulturwissenschaftliche als auch für historische Analysen vonnöten ist
