So wie die Vertreter der westlichen Moderne ihren eigenen Standpunkt dem fremden gegenüberstellten, ohne dass die verschieden gearteten Ansichten zwangsläufig zur Deckung kamen, machte sich Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) die fremde Kultur zu eigen, indem er sie als das notwendige Andere der Modernität in einem grenzüberschreitetenden globalen Kontext sichtete. Tagores Alterität erfüllt somit alle wichtigen Voraussetzungen für die Annäherung zwischen verschiedenen Welten. An seinem Werk und Wirken lässt sich beispielhaft zeigen, wie der Dialog, genauer gesagt der Polylog der Kulturen in Gang kommt und was er zu leisten fähig ist. Das Programm der historischen Avantgardebewegungen des 20. Jahrhunderts, durch die Erschließung und performative Aneignung des Fremden das Bewusstsein für das mögliche Eigene zu schärfen, würde auf diese Weise zu unverhoffter Aktualität gelangen.
