Hintergrund und Inhalt der Broschüre: Organische Mulche und Komposte können die Standortbedingungen für das Pflanzenwachstum verbessern und tragen darüber hinaus dazu bei, organische Reststoffe in den Stoffkreislauf zurückzuführen. Die positive Wirkung setzt eine sachgerechte Anwendung unter Berücksichtigung der Standortverhältnisse, der Inhaltsstoffe und Eigenschaften von Mulchstoffen und Komposten sowie der Ansprüche der Pflanzen voraus. Darüber hinaus sind bei Qualität und Anwendung rechtliche Vorgaben einzuhalten. Vor diesem Hintergrund wurden bereits 1994 von der FLL die „Qualitätsanforderungen und Anwendungsempfehlungen für organische Mulchstoffe und Komposte im Landschaftsbau“ herausgegeben. Neue organische Mulchstoffe, ein stärker differenziertes Angebot an Komposten, erweiterte wissenschaftliche Kenntnisse und Erfahrungen der Anwender sowie nicht zuletzt veränderte Gesetze und Verordnungen haben eine Überarbeitung dieser Ausgabe erforderlich gemacht. In der vorliegenden Ausgabe wurden aus verschiedenen Quellen und z. T. eigenen Untersuchungen Daten und Erfahrungen zusammengetragen, Beispielberechnungen durchgeführt und grundlegende Informationen zu Nährstoffen und Ausbringmengen gegeben. Die Inhalte werden ausführlicher dargestellt, als es für ein Regelwerk meist üblich ist. Damit soll der Anwender in die Lage versetzt werden, vor dem Hintergrund der komplexen Zusammenhänge eine für die jeweilige Situation begründete, sachgerechte Entscheidung zu treffen. Die „Qualitätsanforderungen und Anwendungsempfehlungen für organische Mulchstoffe und Komposte“ beziehen sich auf nach aktuellen gesetzlichen Vorgaben behandelte organische Stoffe und gelten für Neupflanzungen und Pflegearbeiten im Garten- und Landschaftsbau. Die Verwendung von Mulchstoffen bei Anspritzbegrünungen, Erosionssicherungen im Böschungsbereich mittels Erosionsschutzmatten, z. B. bei Lärmschutzwällen, wird nicht erfasst.
