Die Akzeptanz- und Commitmenttherapie (ACT) ist eine neue Form der kognitiven Verhaltenstherapie. Wie ACT helfen kann, mit Ärger und Wut umzugehen, hat G.H. Eifert bereits vorgestellt (BA 11/09). Jetzt erklären Forsyth und Eifert, wie man es schaffen kann, seine Angstzustände, Sorgen, auch schmerzhafte Erinnerungen, Spannungen und Ähnliches in den Griff zu bekommen und in einen Zustand zurückzufinden, in dem Angst nur Teil des Lebens ist, aber nicht das ganze Leben. Viele realitätsgerechte Beispiele, Arbeitsblätter und Übungen im Buch und auf der Begleit-CD zeigen, wie man diesem Ziel auch in Selbsthilfe näherkommen kann. Dabei wird deutlich, wie wichtig es für Betroffene ist, ihre Werte und Lebensziele zu klären, wenn sie sich "ihr Leben zurückholen" wollen. Ein überzeugender Ansatz mit einem für Betroffene sicherlich hilfreichen Programm; auch neben den vielen Ratgebern und Hilfen zur Selbstbehandlung (vgl. zuletzt Hans Morschitzky, ID 17/10) und den zahlreichen einschlägigen Einführungen und Analysen (zuletzt Egon Fabian, BA 5/10) besonders empfohlen.
