The Unnatural known as Juliette has put a bullet through the head of Supreme Commander Anderson, leader of the Reestablishment government of North America, and has named herself Supreme Commander in his stead. His son-and Juliette's lover-Aaron Warner stands by her side to help her,not only in navigating the treacherous political waters, but in keeping her powers under control. But there's a lot Warner has never gotten around to telling Juliette, and when the children of other Reestablishment leaders worldwide show up for an impromptu conference, it's really a signal that their parents are planning to move in and reassert control over both Sector 45 and the American continent. Their weapon of choice? Juliette herself. Much of what drove the previous novels forward is lacking here: Resistance fighters? They're now in charge. Juliette's powers raging out of control? She's got it figured out. Love triangle? Resolved. With a short synopsis, the author could have started on page 200 and moved forward with what appears to be the new conflict, namely, the identity and purposes of Juliette's parents,as it is, many YA readers will bail long before getting to that point. Sexual content and language make this appropriate for mature audiences. VERDICT Purchase where the first three novels are popular.- Elizabeth Friend, Wester Middle School, TXCopyright 2018 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. " Rezension(3): "〈a href=https://www.booklistonline.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/booklist_logo.png alt=Booklist border=0 /〉〈/a〉: March 15, 2018 Grades 8-12 Juliette is at the top of her world (naming herself Supreme Commander of The Reestablishment), in love with and loved by the enigmatic Warner, and hoping to broker peace in a war-torn world. But the other supreme commanders aren't interested in anything except repossessing their failed experiment, aka Juliette. Secrets surround her, and their exposure may do her in before her enemies can. This opens a new planned trilogy to extend the Shatter Me series, and readers will definitely need backstory to make sense of what's happening. Juliette and Warner share narrator duties (and a few steamy scenes) in alternating chapters, and the last third of the book incorporates entries from Juliette's time in the asylum. Pacing is a bit of a problem in this book?almost the whole first half drags?but when Mafi decides to stop dancing around and start moving the plot, it picks up in a delicious way. The last pages build to a cliff-hanger that will have fans groaning aloud for the next installment.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.) "

Content: " Five robots. One unforgettable journey. Their programming will never be the same. Wall-E meets The Wild Robot in this middle grade instant classic about five robots on a mission to rescue their inventor from the corporation that controls them all.Cog looks like a normal twelve-year-old boy. But his name is short for cognitive development, and he was built to learn. But after an accident leaves him damaged, Cog wakes up in an unknown lab and Gina, the scientist who created and cared for him, is nowhere to be found. Surrounded by scientists who want to study him and remove his brain, Cog recruits four robot accomplices for a mission to find her. Cog, ADA, Proto, Trashbot, and Car's journey will likely involve much cognitive development in the form of mistakes, but Cog is willing to risk everything to find his way back to Gina. In this charming stand-alone adventure, Greg van Eekhout breathes life and wisdom into an unforgettable character and crafts a story sure to earn its place among beloved classics like Katherine Applegate's The One and Only Ivan. Created by uniMIND, a greedy company whose technology aims to control the actions of robotic and living creatures, Cog is programmed to learn and to share his knowledge, often in comically literal robot-speak (“I live in a room with a bed where I lie down. It is called a bedroom”). Under the tutelage of kind uniMIND scientist Gina, Cog learns to learn from his mistakes,on his first visit to a grocery store, he fills two carts with a humorous overabundance of goods and, when directed to return most items to the shelves, discovers that “unshopping takes longer than shopping.” After an attempt to “learn by making mistakes” lands him in the hands of villainous uniMIND staffers, and Gina is reassigned elsewhere, Cog and four robot accomplices (his long-lost sister, a dog, a car, and a waste-consuming “Trashbot”) use their varied technological skills to find Gina and rebel against the despotic corporation. Beneath the entertaining, madcap shenanigans, van Eekhout’s story raises intriguing questions about free will, fulfilling one’s life purpose, and hard-won judgment. Agent: Holly Root, Root Literary. " Rezension(3): "〈a href=http://www.kirkusreviews.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/kirkus_logo.png alt=Kirkus border=0 /〉〈/a〉: August 15, 2019 Pinocchio and Wall-E meet Escape From Witch Mountain in this heartwarming sci-fi novel. Cog (short for cognitive development) is a 7-month-old android who looks 12 and is eager to learn more about the world. Designed by Gina, a scientist for uniMIND with whom he lives, Cog spends his days slowly learning all about what it means to be human, from grocery shopping to learning wisdom through making mistakes. After an accident results in Cog's being taken from Gina and locked in the main uniMIND headquarters, he becomes painfully aware of the sinister side of the organization. Refusing to spend any more time as an experiment, Cog escapes along with ADA, his sister android, and several others and attempts to find Gina. In his latest novel, van Eekhout (Voyage of the Dogs, 2018, etc.) brings considerable heart and wisdom to this coming-of-age tale. The central relationships between Cog and Gina and between him and his sister--all of whom are brown-skinned--feel heartbreakingly human and provide a timely example of the difficulties of being an outsider. The author nicely inverts gender roles, making Cog introspective and shy while his sister--a weapon android--is brasher and braver, watching the pair grow together as they explore humanity provides pathos and humor. A thought-provoking tale for younger readers about hubris and what it means to be human. (Science fiction. 8-12) COPYRIGHT(2019) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. "

Content: " William C. Morris YA Debut Award Winner! A hilarious YA contemporary realistic novel about a witty Black French Canadian teen who moves to Austin, Texas, and experiences the joys, clichés, and awkward humiliations of the American high school experience8212 including falling in love. Perfect for fans of Nicola Yoon, When Dimple Met Rishi, and John Green.Norris Kaplan is clever, cynical, and quite possibly too smart for his own good. A Black French Canadian, he knows from watching American sitcoms that those three things don't bode well when you are moving to Austin, Texas. Plunked into a new high school and sweating a ridiculous amount from the oppressive Texas heat, Norris finds himself cataloging everyone he meets: the Cheerleaders, the Jocks, the Loners, and even the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Making a ton of friends has never been a priority for him, and this way he can at least amuse himself until it's time to go back to Canada, where he belongs. Yet against all odds, those labels soon become actual people to Norris...like loner Liam, who makes it his mission to befriend Norris, or Madison the beta cheerleader, who is so nice that it has to be a trap. Not to mention Aarti the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, who might, in fact, be a real love interest in the making. But the night of the prom, Norris screws everything up royally. As he tries to pick up the pieces, he realizes it might be time to stop hiding behind his snarky opinions and start living his life8212 along with the people who have found their way into his heart. Fouhey injects Norris's voice with the usual teenage snark, amplified by his judgmental lasting first impressions of the teens and culture of the American high school, gleaned from watching Hollywood sitcoms. Other characters are also given unique deliveries. Fouhey injects just a hint of superiority in the voice of Aarti Puri, the mysterious girl Norris wants to know better. Another friend, Maddie, sounds consistently friendly and upbeat as she sees the real person behind Norris's defensive facade. Fouey is especially effective in portraying Liam, the hockey wannabe, with a slow, deliberate delivery. N.E.M. AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine" Rezension(3): "〈a href=http://www.slj.com/ target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/schoollibraryjournal_logo.png alt=School Library Journal border=0 /〉〈/a〉: Starred review from December 21, 2018 Gr 7 Up- Seventeen-year-old Norris Kaplan has just had his world turned upside-down. When his mother has to relocate to find work in her field, Norris finds his identity as a Black, French-Canadian hockey fan challenged by his new existence in the suburbs of Austin, Texas. While on the surface this is a classic fish-out-of-water tale, there are many more layers to the story. Lots of different elements of identity are brought to bear in Norris's narration: his Haitian/immigrant heritage, racial identity, and viewpoint on American high school stereotypes. The protagonist's smart and funny demeanor will engage readers, even when he makes obviously bad decisions. Norris is particularly adept at letting his assumptions about his peers impact his ability to relate to them as individuals, either as friends or romantically. The authorial decision to have the outsider be the character influenced by stereotypes rather than the opposite makes for a very compelling reversal that ultimately works. The unresolved ending allows teens to revel in the messiness of high school social blunders and see the value in doing the hard work of making amends. VERDICT A witty debut with whip-smart dialogue that will find much love among fans of authors like John Green and Jason Reynolds.- Kristin Lee Anderson, Jackson County Library Services, OR Copyright 1 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. His professor mom's new tenure-track job transplants Norris mid-school year, and his biting wit and sarcasm are exposed through his cataloging of his new world in a field guide-style burn book. He's greeted in his new life by an assortment of acquaintances, Liam, who is white and struggling with depression,Maddie, a self-sacrificing white cheerleader with a heart of gold, and Aarti, his Indian-American love interest who offers connection. Norris' ego, fueled by his insecurities, often gets in the way of meaningful character development. The scenes showcasing his emotional growth are too brief and, despite foreshadowing, the climax falls flat because he still gets incredible personal access to people he's hurt. A scene where Norris is confronted by his mother for getting drunk and belligerent with a white cop is diluted by his refusal or inability to grasp the severity of the situation and the resultant minor consequences. The humor is spot-on, as is the representation of the black diaspora, the opportunity for broader conversations about other topics is there, however, the uneven buildup of detailed, meaningful exchanges and the glibness of Norris' voice detract.Despite some missteps, this will appeal to readers who enjoy a fresh and realistic teen voice. Gone are hockey hooligans and routinely spoken French, replaced by relentless heat and the ubiquitous orange of the UT Longhorns. Compounding these differences is the fact that Norris is a black Haitian Canadian kid stuck in cowboy country. He resolves to build a barrier of snark to keep everyone out until he can get back north, where he hopes to reunite with his estranged father. However, Norris doesn't count on falling head over heels for the devilishly mysterious, soulful, and fiery Aarti Puri. Philippe's protagonist is as acerbic as they come, tossing one-liners at breakneck speed. His repartee with other characters, especially his closest friends Liam and Maddie, is hilarious and engaging. These friendships are the most interesting aspect of the book, even over the love story, which has a few twists along the way. Readers looking for a diverse, fun, coming-of-age tale need not look any further than this fantastic debut.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.) "

Siblings Mikey and Melinda know something sinister is happening when the “indie kids” start dying in mysterious ways. Zombie deer and eerie blue pillars of light suggest apocalypse (again) in their remote town in Washington State, but they are busy trying to survive familial dysfunction (their father is an alcoholic, their mother a power-hungry politician) that has worsened Mikey’s anxiety and given Mel an eating disorder. Each chapter opens with an ominous (and hilarious) synopsis about the imminent showdown between the Immortals and the hipster clique, and while the payoff after all the supernatural and emotional buildup is minimal, this is Mikey’s story to tell and he’s not trying to save the world, just himself. Ages 14–up."
