Franz Meyer, langjähriger Direktor der Berner Kunsthalle und des Kunstmuseums Basel, hat sich mit sinnlichem Gespür und intellektueller Weitsicht stets auf ungesichertem Terrain - für die Kunst seiner Zeit - engagiert. Er hat seine Kunstgeschichte jedoch nicht nur in den Räumen und an den Wänden des Museums dargelegt, sondern auch im Vortrag, im Essay, in der Abhandlung formuliert. Der Band versammelt 50 von Franz Meyer selbst ausgewählte Schriften aus der Zeit von 1956 bis 2001, die von seiner Augen- und Zeitzeugenschaft, seinem unbeirrbaren Qualitätssinn geprägt sind. Die Beiträge widmen sich den großen Lebensthemen Franz Meyers: den Klassikern der Moderne, der Nachkriegskunst in Europa und den USA, der Kunst nach dem Abstrakten Expressionismus. Neun bisher unveröffentlichte Vorträge wurden für die schriftliche Fassung leicht überarbeitet; die restlichen Texte, bisher verstreut publiziert und daher nur mühsam aufzufinden, werden in unveränderter Form erstmals zusammengeführt.
