Nach seinem Tod am 14. Juni 1893 hinterließ der Münchener Theologie- und nachmalige Philosophieprofessor Jakob Frohschammer (1821-1893) neben den gedruckten wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten zahlreiche Archivalien, darunter eine Reihe ungedruckter Vorlesungshandschriften. Die Handschrift mit dem Titel "Religionsphilosophie", die sich im Besitz der Universitätsbibliothek München befindet, ist von ihren ersten Teilen her nicht nur die älteste und mit ihren insgesamt 247 Blättern zugleich eine der umfangreichsten Vorlesungshandschriften Frohschammers, die Religionsphilosophie ist zweifellos auch jene Thematik, zu der sich Frohschammer seit Beginn seiner akademischen Lehrtätigkeit an der Universität am stärksten hingezogen fühlte und die er von Sommersemester 1851 bis Sommersemester 1866 zuerst als außerordentlicher Professor an der Theologischen und später als ordentlicher Professor an der Philosophischen Fakultät beinahe jedes zweite Semester vortrug. Die vorliegende textkritische Edition versteht sich als Beitrag zur Erforschung der Philosophie und der Theologie Jakob Frohschammers und darüber hinaus der Philosophie- und Theologiegeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts allgemein. Sie macht einen bedeutenden Quellentext der wissenschaftlichen Öffentlichkeit zugänglich und eröffnet so die Möglichkeit zu weiteren Forschungen.
