Er schildert nämlich die Ereignisse aus der Sicht eines der Söhne, der hautnah erlebt, wie seine Eltern die Flucht planen, den Stoff für den Ballon heimlich besorgen, ihn in mühseliger Nachtarbeit zu einer Hülle vernähen müssen und wie viel Angst sie vor der Entdeckung durch die allgegenwärtige Staatsmacht haben. Als es schließlich eines Nachts tatsächlich zur Flucht kommt, fiebert der Leser richtig mit, ob alles gut gehen möge. Die hervorragenden schnörkellosen Illustrationen unterstreichen das Geschehen authentisch.
