"John Furnival (1933–2020) gehörte zu den Schlüsselfiguren in der Entwicklung der experimentellen Poesie. In den frühen 1960er Jahren begann er sich mit dem literarischen Potenzial gefalteter Papierstrukturen und Prozessen des Entfaltens zu beschäftigen. Mit Ian Hamilton Finlay arbeitete er intensiv an neuen Möglichkeiten der Gestaltung Visueller Poesie. 1963 gründete er mit Dom Sylvester Houédard die Druckerei 'Openings' in Rooksmoor House (Woodchester, Gloucestershire), die zahlreiche gefaltete Gedichtobjekte heute international renommierter Dichter-Künstler veröffentlichte. Darunter waren neben Ian Hamilton Finlay auch Augusto de Campos, Hansjörg Mayer, Tom Phillips, Louis Zukofsky, Edwin Morgan, Richard Kostelanetz und Ernst Jandl. 'Untitled (Unfolder)', eins von Furnivals eigenen entfaltbaren Gedichtobjekten, erschien 1967 als Teil der von dem legendären französisch-englischen Laut- und Schreibmaschinen-Dichter Henri Chopin herausgegebenen experimentellen Zeitschrift 'OU.
