Der alte Gefängniswärter Eiji (Ken Takakura) trauert um seine geliebte Frau Yoko (Yuko Tanaka): Die ehemalige Sängerin, mit der er 15 Jahre lang verheiratet war, starb an Krebs. Ihr letzter Wille ist es, dass Eiji aus der mitteljapanischen Provinz Toyama in ihre Heimat im Süden fährt, um ihre Asche im Meer zu verteilen und einen Brief abzuholen - im Fischerdorf Usuka nahe Nagasaki. Eiji kündigt seinen Job und fährt los. Unterwegs trifft er verschiedene Leute wie einen herumtreibenden Dichter (Takeshi Kitano) und zwei einsamen Fischverkäufer (Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, Koichi Sato). Gerade noch rechtzeitig kommt er an, doch es tobt ein Sturm, weshalb die Asche vorerst warten muss. In der Zwischenzeit kommt Eiji in einem kleinen Restaurant unter, das von einer Mutter (Kimiko Yo) und ihrer Tochter (Haruka Ayase) betrieben wird... Es gibt nur wenige Regisseure, die aus Sentimentalität ganz grosses Kino machen können. Auffällig viele davon sind in die Jahre gekommene Japaner - etwa Yoji Yamada, Hayao Miyazaki oder Yasuo Furuhata. Letzterer schaffte es mit "Dearest", den grossen Ken Takakura aus der vorübergehenden Rente zu holen: Seit Riding Alone for Thousand of Miles im Jahr 2005 stand er nicht mehr vor der Kamera. Für seinen sagenhaften 205. Film gab er ein Comeback, das kurioserweise inhaltlich wie stimmungsmässig stark an sein letztes Werk erinnern. Basierend auf dem Roman von Akio Morisawa geht es wieder um eine lange Reise, die eine Figur nicht nur an einen fernen Ort bringt, sondern sie auch Menschlichkeit erleben lässt und letztendlich ein Trip in die eigene Seele wird... "Dearest" ist, um es in den einfachsten Worten auszudrücken, einfach ein schöner und herzensguter Film. Die Überraschung am Ende mag etwas weit hergeholt und vom Zufall dirigiert sein, viele Szenen wirken wie Wiederholungen und die Manipulation der Gefühle dürfte für manche Zuschauer zu viel des Guten sein. Doch wer sich auf das bedächtige Tempo und die stoische Hauptfigur einlässt, der wird mit einem Wohlfühl-Film belohnt, der auf einigen der traurigsten Inhalte eines Lebens aufbaut, etwa Tod, Einsamkeit, Reue - und daraus doch etwas lebensbejahendes schafft, etwas, das uns zeigt, dass der Weg, auf dem wir gehen, vielleicht Stolpersteine hat und im schlimmsten Fall nicht einmal zu viel führt. Aber es lohnt sich immer, ihn zu gehen. Mit offenen Augen und offenem Herzen. (Molodezhnaja)
