Über den Kreterkönig Midas heißt es in Ovids Metamorphosen: "Da be schenkte der Gott, der sich freut' ob der Heimkehr des Alten, / Ihn mit der Gnade des Wunsches, die jener nutzlos vergeudet. / Übel nützte der das Glück, da er sprach: 'Laß, was mit dem Leibe / Je ich berühre, laß alles in glänzendes Gold sich verwandeln. '" (Ovid, Metamorphosen XI, 100-105) Der Sage nach geht dieser Wunsch in Erfüllung und von nun an hat König Midas Probleme ohne Ende: "Und wie die Diener dem Frohen die Tafel be reiten, / Reich mit Speisen besetzt und versehen mit köstlichem Brote, / Ob nun jener dabei mit der Rechten die Gabe der Ceres / Hatte berührt - es er starrten zu Gold die Geschenke der Ceres. / Ob er mit gierigem Zahn die Speisen wollte zermalmen, / kaum berührte sie der Zahn, deckt goldene Kruste die Speise. Mischt er die Gabe des Gottes, der Zauber gewährte, mit Wasser, / Hättest Du flüssiges Gold durch die Kehle ihm fließen gesehen. / Reich und elend zugleich und betäubt von dem seltsamen Unglück, / Will er dem Reichtum enfliehn und haßt, was er eben begehrte. Nichts stillt mehr seinen Hunger, von Durst brennt trocken die Kehle, / Überall quält ihn das leidige Gold, das er selbst sich gewählt hat.
