Content: In Western civilization, we have come to regard the body as an instrument or a machine that responds to external challenges but does not have a life or creativity of its own. Thanks to some of its inherent capabilities, however, the living body can act in a highly intelligent and creative manner. All of us have noticed from time to time that our body can move naturally, without any conscious effort; it can adapt to new situational demands and propose unexpected solutions. While skiing or rock climbing or sailing, we may have abandoned ourselves to our bodily timing and responsiveness, our acute feeling for new solutions. In The Clever Body, Gabor Csepregi describes in detail the nature and scope of these innate abilities sensibility, spontaneity, mimetic faculty, sense of rhythm, memory, and imagination and reflects on their significance in human life.

Content: "Human life is never uniform; its course is frequently punctuated by unexpected and often transformative moments which alter its development. What are the characteristics of such life-defining moments, what responses do they evoke and how do they come to prompt significant transformations in the lives of those who experience them? In Vivo: A Phenomenology of Life-Defining Moments explores foundational questions of human life and experience in a manner both lucid and profound. Wide-ranging in scope and appeal, Csepregi's book addresses the matter of life's pivotal moments from various angles. Engagement with a foreign culture, the decision to break free from infelicitous circumstances, an exceptional generous action undertaken in the context of an otherwise regular day, among others, are the kind of experience that Csepregi discusses in terms of their life-altering potential. Further, through illustrative reference to examples both real and fictional, Csepregi reveals the primacy of personal feelings in shaping human life and demonstrates the formative educational power of these moments outside the traditional context of formal education. In an age marked by increasing anxiety about the flattening and homogenizing tendencies of contemporary life, In Vivo: A Phenomenology of Life-Defining Moments is both timely and revelatory. Informed by deep familiarity with established traditions of philosophical thought, its illuminations will speak clearly and powerfully to all those concerned to better perceive and understand those moments that define the nature and quality of life."--

Content: Play is not only a kind of activity, but also a set of attitudes. We may join a card game in a casino without assuming a play attitude; conversely we may transform a seemingly tedious action, such as a walk to the store, into a pleasant experience of spontaneous movements by adopting an attitude of play. Attitudes of Play is a comprehensive study of the persistent human tendency to bring a cheerful and good-humoured outlook to any kind of situation, including the serious and the mundane. Gabor Csepregi offers a phenomenological description of forms of playfulness, showing how, time and again, our attitudes of play redefine and shape diverse activities and experiences – from teaching, healing, or worshipping to political conflict or walking down the street. With play attitudes, we exercise our freedom to colour these scenes or give them an altogether new form, evoking in us more refined sentiments and more acute perceptions. This book seeks to distinguish play activities from attitudes of play, showing that the latter hold value not merely for their educational or other instrumental benefits but also, and perhaps most importantly, for the overall fulfillment and well-being they offer in all stages of human existence.
