Nach 'Ein treuer Freund' (ID-A 11/17) publiziert der angesehene Autor und Philosophielehrer die philosophische Auseinandersetzung des Lehrers Albert (56) mit sich selbst und dem Sinn des Lebens. Er hat gerade von seiner Hausärztin und ehemaligen Geliebten erfahren, dass er unheilbar an ALS erkrankt ist. Seine Frau Eirin (Süßwasserbiologin) ist auf einem Kongress in Melbourne. Er fährt allein in ihre Ferienhütte an einem einsamen Waldsee, um sich für oder gegen einen Suizid zu entscheiden. Denn er will selbst über sein Schicksal bestimmen und in Würde sterben. Während er seine Lebensfehler ins Hüttenbuch (d.i. Familienchronik) einträgt, astrophysikalischen Überlegungen nachgeht und sich darauf vorbereitet, sich nachts im See zu ertränken, erscheint plötzlich ein Fremder, den er zunächst für ein Trugbild hält. Durch ihn findet er zur Versöhnung mit sich selbst und erkennt, dass er ein Vertreter der Menschheit mit familiären Aufgaben ist.
