Die Autorin hat am Bryn Mawr College Klassische Philologie gelehrt und war Präsidentin der American Philological Association. Mit diesem Buch legt sie eine kompetente, moderne Darstellung von Leben, Werk und Rezeption des römischen Dichters Catull (ca. 84 - ca. 54 v.Chr.) vor. Zunächst stellt sie ihn in seinen spannenden zeitlichen Kontext, nämlich die Endphase der römischen Republik mit ihren politischen und gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen, ihren Sexualnormen und ihrer Dichterwelt. Catulls Werk nähert sie sich von mehreren Seiten: Sie beleuchtet die Anordnung der Gedichte, widmet sich seinem "lyrischen Ich", das er in seinen Werken einnimmt, und untersucht, inwieweit dieses sich von der Person Catull unterscheidet. Weiter analysiert sie anhand ausgewählter Beispiele die Sprache und die dichterische Architektur, mit der der ebenso sensibel wie akribisch vorgehende Lyriker arbeitete.
