Aus einem futuristisch-verklärten Sowjet-Moskau brechen ein etwas schrulliger, aber von seinem Traum besessener Akademieprofessor, seine Assistentin und ein junger Pionier mit einem selbst gebastelten Katapult ins All und zum Mond auf. Ein unter Mitwirkung des legendären sowjetischen Raketenpioniers Konstantin Tsiolkovsky entstandener Science-Fiction-Film, der am Ende der Stummfilm-Ära entstand. Den Vorstoß in den Weltraum koppelt der Film mit der Aufbruchsstimmung der frühen Stalin-Zeit und wird dabei von einem mit Blick auf die Realitäten der Diktatur naiven Pathos getragen.
