La Galería de Arte Nacional presenta en sus salas la muestra. "Carlos Raúl Villanueva. Un moderno en Sudamérica". Con esta exposición la GAN conmemora el primer centenario del natalicio del maestro de la arquitectura venezolana del siglo XX. Cinco etapas de la obra de Villanueva reseñan la trayectoria de la modernidad en Venezuela plasmada por los curadores de la muestra, los arquitectos William Niño Araque y Carmen Araujo. Estos períodos, iniciados en los años treinta, se despliegan a través de planos históricos, fotografías, documentos personales y maquetas que exponen una aproximación histórica a la obra del maestro. "La caída del eclecticismo" corresponde a la primera etapa, donde traslada su aprendizaje académico proveniente de la escuela francesa a la realidad sudamericana. En ella se reseñan obras monumentales como la Maestranza de Maracay y los Museos de Bellas Artes y de Ciencias. La segunda fase, "La primera modernidad" representa su visón racionalista. Villanueva realiza arquitectura moderna, ejemplo de ella tenemos la Escuela Gran Colombia, la zona médica de la Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas, el Estadio Olímpico y la urbanización El Silencio. Estas obras corresponden a la transición entre arquitectura neoclacisista, vanguardia modernista y el criollismo. El tercer momento, "La plena modernidad", el creador descubre su lenguaje personal, único e irrepetible, un discurso que domina el trópico a través del manejo de la luz y de la sombra, una propuesta que integra la espacialidad que nace de la propia geografía con ese sentido tan profundo de venezolanidad. A este ciclo corresponde su máxima obra: la Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas, donde experimenta el uso de la tecnología y la búsqueda de las atmósferas tropicales con la síntesis de las artes. En el cuarto y quinto momento, reconocidos como "El Compromiso Social" y "El minimalismo", plasma sus experiencias en la búsqueda de soluciones a la vivienda obrera, a través de la realización de la urbanización 23 de Enero, Casas Caoma y Sotavento, finalmente el Museo de Arte Moderno Jesús Soto y los Cubos de Montreal evidencian el tránsito de sus últimas indagaciones hacia una expresión más descarnada e intimista. Estos cinco momentos creativos manifiestan el desarrollo de un lenguaje plástico y tendencias artísticas que incorporan, a partir de un vocabulario único y personal, la arquitectura venezolana al hábeas de la arquitectura internacional. "Toda la obra de Villanueva se fundó en afirmar el ser venezolano y convertirlo en un comportamiento", asegura William Niño. Para el arquitecto, Niño Araque, el verdadero homenaje al centenario de este artista es enriquecer y conjugarse con el tiempo contemporáneo, mantener un discurso occidental en la calidad de la obra, estar en contacto con las raíces y la historia, que es en definitiva reflexionar sobre el máximo legado de Villanueva: la ética de la nacionalidad.
