Die Schwestern Irma und Martha sind Waisen, eine Nachbarin kümmert sich. Irma arbeitet als Verkäuferin, Martha als Hausmädchen. Deren Dienstherr schwängert sie, zwingt sie zur Abtreibung. Als Irma mit ihr zu Dr. Bragenheim kommt, erkennt dieser, dass es zu spät ist. Er ist bei der Geburt zugegen, Irma und er entwickeln eine große Liebe zueinander. Ihr Glück ist nur kurz, denn der jüdische Arzt wird immer stärkeren Repressalien ausgesetzt, nach Theresienstadt verschleppt, dann in Auschwitz-Birkenau ermordet. Irma verliert als "Judenhure" ihren Job, gibt die Hoffnung auf eine gemeinsame Zukunft aber nicht auf. Nach dem Krieg beschließt sie, Erich posthum zu ehelichen. In Rückblenden deckt die mehrfach ausgezeichnete Autorin Anke Gebert (vgl. ID-A 31/15) die Lawine des Judenhasses in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus auf. Sie berührt zutiefst durch die Persönlichkeit Irmas, die sie ergreifend darstellt (vgl. C. Roth: "Wir sehen uns Unter den Linden", ID-A 16/19). Sehr gut lesbar vermittelt Gebert nach einer wahren Geschichte, wie Hass eskalieren kann. Ein überall wichtiges Buch in unserer gefährdeten Zeit.
