Im deutsch besetzten Italien fielen zwischen 1943 und 1945 mehr als 70.000 Menschen dem Partisanenkrieg zum Opfer, darunter etwa 10.000 Zivilisten, die bei Massakern und Geiselerschießungen durch die Besatzer getötet wurden. Diese Ereignisse haben sich tief in das kollektive Gedächtnis Nachkriegsitaliens eingeprägt. Der Autor, der ein Jahrzehnt lang als Sachverständiger bei Kriegsverbrecherprozessen vor Gerichten tätig war, stellt in diesem Buch erstmals systematisch und auf breite Quellenbasis gestützt das Vorgehen der deutschen Besatzungstruppen dar. Sachlich und differenziert werden u. a. mehrere durch die Prozesse der letzten Jahren bekannt gewordene Kriegsverbrechen wie Sant'Anna di Stazzema, Civitella in Val di Chiana und Marzabotto sowie deren Täter untersucht.
