Das vorliegende Buch ist aus einer Sammlung von Einzelarbeiten entstanden, mit der im Jahre 1942 begonnen wurde. Im selben Jahre wurde die deutsche Fliegerpsychologische Untersuchungsstelle aufgelöst, die damals die größte Organisation ihrer Art war. Seitdem sind zehn Jahre vergangen, und es lohnt sich wohl, die Frage nach der Bedeutung der Psychologie für das Fliegen einer Betrachtung zu unterziehen. Es ist nicht die Absicht des Verfassers, eine Apologie der deutschen Fliegerpsychologie zu schreiben: Die Leistungen der deutschen Flieger sprechen für sich. Mögen auch die theoretischen fliegerpsychologischen Grundlagen nicht immer gut fundiert gewesen sein und die angewendeten Methoden in der praktischen Auslese nicht in allen Fällen den Forderungen naturwissenschaftlicher Exaktheit entsprochen haben, so hat doch der Erfolg den deutschen Fliegerpsychologen im allgemeinen recht gegeben. Nicht mangelhafte Leistungen, sondern die politische und militärische Situation von 1942 führte zur Einstellung der Arbeiten auf diesem Gebiet. Im gleichen Jahre 1942 begann in den USA der großzügige Auf- und Ausbau der Fliegerpsychologie in der amerikanischen Luftwaffe. Seitdem hat sich die Fliegerpsychologie in Amerika zu einer theoretischen und angewandten Wissenschaft entwickelt, die aus der modernen Luftfahrt nicht mehr wegzudenken ist. Drei Gebiete haben vor allen anderen in den letzten Jahren an Bedeutung gewonnen: I. Die Psychotechnik des Fliegens, 2. Die Psychophysiologie des Fliegens, 3. Die Erforschung der Fliegerpersönlichkeit. Damit ist der Rahmen für eine Psychologie des Menschen im Flugzeug abgesteckt. Nur auf die ersten beiden Themen kann in diesem Buche eingegangen werden; das dritte Thema soll gesondert behandelt werden
