Verschiedene Erscheinungen von Fundamentalismus stellen mit zunehmender Pluralisierung der Lebensstile, mit der (post-)modernen Enttraditionalisierung und Multikulturalität in Europa und weltweit eine wachsende Gefahr dar: theokratische und evangelikale Tendenzen in Religionen, absolutistische Ambitionen im Politischen, Alleinherrschaft des Kapitals und der Zwangscharakter moderner Medien. Sie stellen die Trennung von Religion und Staat, die rechtsstaatlich-liberale Demokratie, Teilhabe aller Bürger und Bürgerinnen an Kapital und Markt und die Freiheit im Umgang mit Medien infrage. Solchen teilweise fanatisch vertretenen Exklusivansprüchen und bisweilen mit Erlösungsphantasien durchsetzten Praktiken von Gewaltherrschaft darf nicht mit Gegengewalt begegnet werden. Mit einer Kultur der gegenseitigen Achtung (und nicht bloß der Toleranz) können Fundamentalismen im Entstehen erkannt und bearbeitet werden – eine Gratwanderung im Schmelztiegel (post-)moderner Gesellschaften.
