Der italienische Humanist Leon Battista Alberti (1404–1472) hat mit seinen gut fünfzig Intercenales ein neulateinisches Meisterwerk aus thematisch und stilistisch sehr abwechslungsreichen Kurzprosastücken geschaffen. Je nach Gesichtspunkt als 'dramatische' Dialoge, Miniaturkomödien, Fabeln, Kurzgeschichten, Novellen, Briefe, Satiren, Invektiven usw. klassifizierbar, wurden sie von Alberti wohl 1443 zu 'Prosagedichtbüchern' zusammengestellt. Die Autorinnen und Autoren zeigen, wie Albertis lateinische 'Tischgespräche' hohe sprachliche Virtuosität, gedankliche Prägnanz und psychologischen Tiefblick (der bisweilen auto-psychoanalytische Züge eines traumatisierten Außenseiters annimmt) mit raffinierten Schichten der Antikerezeption verknüpfen, die kaleidoskopartig immer neue Bedeutungsdimensionen generieren. Ein desillusioniertes und schonungsloses, oft erstaunlich aktuell wirkendes und doch ganz der italienischen Frührenaissance verhaftetes Weltbild spricht aus diesen nicht selten symbolisch-allegorisch verschlüsselten Kleinodien, die mit der Verve eines Angry Young Man überkommene ethische und ästhetische Wertehierarchien in Frage stellen.
