Weil er sich "sein" Mädchen nicht wegnehmen lassen will, inszeniert der inzwischen zum Tode verurteilte Gangster einen Bankraub mit Totschlag, der zur Verurteilung des unschuldigen Nebenbuhlers führt. Beide begegnen sich in den Todeszellen, und nach herzzerreißenden Szenen verzichtet der Gangster auf seine Rache. Virtuos durchkomponiert, fesselt Josef von Sternbergs erster Tonfilm nicht nur durch die künstlichen Licht- und Schattenspiele, sondern auch durch den Einsatz von Musik und Geräuschen und die Schauspielerführung. - Sehenswert.
