In der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts befreiten sich zahlreiche Länder und Regionen von kolonialer Fremdherrschaft. Was bedeutete diese Dekolonisierung für die Gestaltung der internationalen Beziehungen und der Weltwirtschaft? Die Politikwissenschaftlerin Adom Getachew rekonstruiert die politischen Ideale und Konzepte zentraler Protagonisten im Kampf um die Unabhängigkeit kolonisierter Länder sowie führender Politiker in postkolonialen Staaten. Sie zeigt, dass Forderungen nach Selbstbestimmung, die sich der Fremdherrschaft entgegensetzten, hierbei eine dominante Rolle spielten. Diese seien jedoch nicht mit dem Modell des souveränen Nationalstaats europäischer Prägung gleichzusetzen. Zu den Kernanliegen der postkolonialen Selbstbestimmung zählte vielmehr auch die Gestaltung transnationaler politischer Zusammenhänge, etwa die gleichberechtigte Integration in die Weltgemeinschaft sowie der Abbau ökonomischer Dominanzbeziehungen. Wichtige Strategien, mit denen diese Ziele erreicht werden sollten, waren die Errichtung regionaler Föderationen (etwa in Afrika oder in der Karibik) sowie der Aufbau einer Neuen Weltwirtschaftsordnung (NWWO). Die Autorin zeigt auf, was diese Forderungen beinhalteten, und zeichnet die Bemühungen ihrer Umsetzung nach. Dass diese letztlich scheiterten, sei lehrreich auch für heutige Debatten um die Herstellung einer egalitäreren Weltordnung.
