In diesem Roman verarbeitet der als Anthropologe und Erzähler bewanderte Autor (zuletzt BA 5/97) seinen jahrelangen Aufenthalt auf den Philippinen, doch nicht "das Lächeln Asiens" der Touristenwerbung. Er schildert nüchtern und unterkühlt den Sumpf von Verbrechen und Korruption, die unvorstellbare Armut, die bestialische Grausamkeit der Polizei und den Zynismus der Behörden und als Hintergrund die durch die jahrhundertealte chinesische, spanische, japanische und amerikanische Überfremdung zerstörte Landschaft und Kultur. Der Protagonist, ein Engländer, der eine anthropologische Felduntersuchung plant, beobachtet solche Szenen zunächst mit der moralischen Empörung des Europäers, die am Ende der philosophischen Resignation weicht. Ein ebenso nachdenklicher wie harter, überzeugend realistischer Roman, der an die Nieren geht.
