Iran - 20 Jahre nach der Revolution. Über den Machtkampf zwischen den Anhängern des totalitären Gottesstaates und den Verteidigern des modernen toleranten Islam: Für ihre Dokumentation über den Iran haben Thomas Giefer und Ahmad Taheri auch die bekannten Oppositionspolitiker Dariusch und Parvane Fotuhar befragt. Es war eins ihrer letzten Interviews, denn kurz darauf, im November des vergangenen Jahres, wurde das Ehepaar erstochen. Dies war der Beginn einer Mordserie, zu deren nächsten Opfern der Soziologe und Schriftsteller Madschid Scharif und der Dichter Mohammad Mochtari gehörten. Wer ist verantwortlich für die Morde? Revolutionsführer Ali Khamenei machte ausländische Mächte verantwortlich, iranische Zeitungen verdächtigten offen die konservative Fraktion des Landes. Im Iran herrscht ein Richtungskampf um die Zukunft des Staates, nachdem der liberale Geistliche Mohammad Khatami 1997 mit über 70 Prozent der Stimmen zum Staatspräsidenten gewählt wurde. Doch seine Macht ist stark eingeschränkt, den ihm steht eine konservative Mehrheit in Parlament und Regierung gegenüber. Streitkräfte, Geheimdienst, Polizei, Justiz und Medien beherrscht zum Beispiel Khamenei, Nachfolger von Ajathollah Khomeni. Dieser hatte vor 20 Jahren, am 02. April 1979, die "Islamische Republik Iran" gegründet, den weltweit ersten islamischen Staat. Durch einen Voksaufstand war zuvor der Schah Reza Pahlewi gestürzt worden. Heute lehnen sich vor allem die Studenten gegen seine Nachfolger auf. Nimmt der Iran 20 Jahre nach der Revolution langsam Abschied vom Gottesstaat? Der Film betrachtet die derzeitige Situation und die Stimmung in der Bevölkerung, blickt aber auch auf die Anfänge und Entwicklung der Revolution zurück.
