Series Statement: Publications of the Newton Institute ; 2
Content: Dynamo theory, the study of the generation and maintenance of magnetic fields by fluid motions, is important in many areas of physics, ranging from stellar and galactic dynamics, through solar physics and geomagnetism, to reactor physics. This volume contains the lectures given by leading specialists, for an intensive course held at the Newton Institute, as part of a NATO Advanced Study Institute. The course was intended for beginning graduate students, so starts with background material, before leading on to describe areas closer to current research. Topics covered include planetary and solar dynamos, fast dynamos and the use of symmetry principles to derive evolution equations. Detailed bibliographies are provided. As the only modern introduction to the subject, this will be welcome reading for students in planetary and solar physics, plasma physics and astrophysics.

Content: In his works on paper and large-scale installations, the Scottish artist Andrew Gilbert combines fictive situations with historical fact. The impulse is always provided by incidents connected with colonialism, especially that of the British Empire, which in the way he reflects on them, go far beyond the historical context, and whose consequences still weigh heavily until today. His work also examines the reappraisal of that time in films and literature. His method is reincarnation. Through slipping into the role of a British major or general, assimilating alien identities, and appearing as a real or fictive character in his artistic work, he succeeds in projecting history into the present (Zdenek Felix). Visions of the past and its impact on the present remain palpable. Within this context, the Berlin-based artist examines the repercussions of historical facts in art, in particular the Expressionists and their handling of so-called Primitivism. Content: This book examines how 20th century theorists have used a discourse of “crisis” to frame their conceptualizations of modernity. Through an investigation of four key thinkers (Georg Lukács, Hannah Arendt, Reinhart Koselleck and Jürgen Habermas), Gilbert argues that scholars in the social sciences and humanities should be cautious of treating crises as explananda for research. Instead, the book calls for sociological analysis of the role of “crisis” within social scientific discourse, and examines how “crisis” has been used as a conceptual frame for legitimating theoretical agendas. Gilbert’s “sociology of concepts” approach presents crisis as a paradigm of modern thought, and, more generally, reflects on how concepts can become the carriers of diverse intellectual traditions and debates.
