In der Reihe "Gerstenbergs visuelle Enzyklopädie" (zuletzt "Das visuelle Lexikon" BA 8/03) gibt die Gemeinschaftsproduktion von Gerstenberg und Dorling-Kindersley einen Überblick von 1450 bis heute. Sie verbindet 5- bis 6-seitige Übersichtsartikel zu u.a. Renaissance, Barock, Erster und Zweiter Weltkrieg mit reich illustrierten Doppelseiten zu Einzelthemen wie Darwin, Aufstieg des Faschismus und die Ära Kennedys. Dadurch wird der Nachteil des DK-Vorgehens (unverbundene Texthäppchen) ausgeglichen, ohne dass der Vorteil (attraktive Bebilderung) verloren geht. Inhaltlich wird Alltagsgeschichte - u. a. Mode, Werbung - mit wichtigen politischen Ereignissen - u. a. Französische Revolution, Aufstieg Preußens - verzahnt. Zwar liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der Geschichte Europas und der USA, doch gelegentlich werden auch Afrika, Asien und Lateinamerika berücksichtigt. Insgesamt ein optisch und inhaltlich beeindruckender Band, der durch einen Leinenrücken auch häufiges Ausleihen überleben sollte. Zur Anschaffung jeder (Schul-)Bibliothek neben Mais textintensiverer "Weltgeschichte" (BA 12/02) empfohlen. (Peter Bräunlein)
