Zu diesem Anlass legt der amerikanische Musikwissenschaftler und Strauss-Forscher eine umfängliche, sorgsam gearbeitete Monografie vor, die Strauss' künstlerischen und biografischen Lebenshintergrund detailgenau recherchiert und aufzeichnet, - bei guter Verständlichkeit. In 6 Kapiteln beschäftigt er sich mit Strauss' früher musikalischer Entwicklung, seinen einzelnen Stationen Meiningen, München, Weimar, Bayreuth ..., er vollzieht den kompositorischen Schritt von den Tondichtungen hin zur Bühne und zur Oper Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts, Thema sind auch seine Erfolge und Fehlschläge nach dem 1. Weltkrieg, die turbulenten 1930er-Jahre, natürlich auch die Periode während des 2. Weltkriegs, die Verstrickungen während der Nazizeit und die Zeit danach. Dies berichtet der Autor alles unaufgeregt, ohne zu verurteilen. Auch wenn im Jubeljahr noch einiges an einschlägiger Literatur zu erwarten ist, so ist dieses Buch auf jeden Fall ein wichtiger Beitrag zum Strauss-Jahr

Richard Strauss ist bis heute einer der meistgespielten Opernkomponisten. Schon zu Lebzeiten wurden seine Werke weltweit aufgeführt, und als Dirigent war er international begehrt.
