Der arbeitslos durch Paris ziehende Eddy Vuibert wird irrtümlich für einen Juden gehalten und verbucht durch diese Verwechslung plötzlich geschäftliche Erfolge und sozialen Aufstieg. - Das Milieu der jüdischen Händler im Pariser Sentier-Viertel ist Schauplatz der frechen und prominent besetzten Komödie, die geschickt mit alten Vorurteilen spielt. Arbeitslos und ohne Perspektive irrt Eddie Vuibert durch Paris. Das Glück war bislang nicht auf seiner Seite, und so sieht Eddie keinen Grund, nicht auch noch den letzten Geldschein zu verwetten. Prompt gewinnt der notorische Verlierer, aber da die Hütchenspieler anderer Ansicht sind, kommt es zu Handgreiflichkeiten. Ein couragierter älterer Herr hält Eddie fälschlicherweise für einen jüdischen Mitbürger und schlägt die zwielichtigen Betrüger in die Flucht. Eddie hat Glück im Unglück, denn sein Retter ist der erfolgreiche Tuchhändler Victor Benzakem, der ihm einen Job in seinem Betrieb anbietet. Notgedrungen verschweigt Eddie seine nichtjüdische Herkunft und nimmt das Angebot an. Als Hilfsarbeiter stapelt Eddie im Lager zunächst unzählige Textilrollen. Doch mit dem unbeschwerten Geist desjenigen, der nichts zu verlieren hat, entdeckt er rasch die ihm bislang fremde Welt der Juden, lernt ihre Umgangsformen und vor allem den ausgeprägten Geschäftssinn der Tuchhändler kennen. So mausert Eddie sich schon nach kurzer Zeit zu einem ausgeschlafenen Textilverkäufer. Doch als über-assimilierter Wahljude will er nun mehr erreichen. Um Sandra zu beeindrucken, die hübsche Tochter des früheren Chefs, eröffnet er ein eigenes Unternehmen, das Victors Geschäft bald überflügelt. Nach einigen Turbulenzen steht der Heirat mit Sandra nichts mehr im Weg, das heißt: fast nichts. Denn als er den Rabbi nicht nur als ćHochwürden̮ anspricht, sondern den Geistlichen auch noch zu bestechen versucht, muss der getarnte "Goi" feststellen, dass es Dinge gibt, die nicht mit Geld geregelt werden. Mit über vier Millionen Zuschauern zählte diese romantische Komödie von Regisseur Thomas Gilou in Frankreich zu den absoluten Kassenknüllern. Nicht allein das Staraufgebot mit Richard Bohringer ("Diva"), Richard Anconina ("Six Pack - Jäger des Schlächters") und Anthony Delon ("Chronik eines angekündigten Todes") ließ die Franzosen vor den Kinos Schlange stehen. Mit sicherem Gespür für Pointen wirft Gilou einen schalkhaften Blick hinter die Kulissen des von Traditionen und ungeschriebenen Gesetzen geprägten Milieus der Juden im Pariser Textil-Viertel Le Sentier - und bürstet dabei etliche Vorurteile gegen den Strich.
