La 4e de couv. indique : "Dès le début de la Grande Guerre, en réponse aux violentes critiques des Alliés, l'Allemagne créa un service de préservation des oeuvres d'art (Kunstschutz) dans les territoires occupés. À l'Ouest, archéologues et historiens de l'art allemands privilégièrent les fouilles, la conservation, les publications patrimoniales. À l'Est, ils soulignèrent d'abord la spécificité de l'art polonais et concoururent à sa sauvegarde mais à l'été 1917 ils changèrent de position, le réduisant à une simple imitation de l'art allemand. Après l'Armistice, la question des réparations en biens artistiques fut âprement débattue dans un contexte général de reprise du marché de l'art et de renforcement des règles d'exportation des oeuvres."
