Preissteigerungen, Konzentrationsprozesse und fehlende Geschäftsmodelle sind Ausdruck einer strukturellen Krise des wissenschaftlichen Publikationswesens. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die drei diskutierten Aktionsfelder zur Lösung der Zeitschriftenkrise untersucht und auf ihre Tauglichkeit zur kostenfreien medizinischen Informationsversorgung für Entwicklungsländer hin überprüft. Zwei Aktionsfelder, die Kooperation zwischen Fachgesellschaften und mittelständischen Verlagen und die Herausgabe alternativer, preisgünstiger Zeitschriften dienen der Durchsetzung einer wissenschaftsfreundlicheren Preisgestaltung auf der Basis traditioneller Geschäftsmodelle und erweisen sich deshalb als ungeeignet. Nur das dritte Aktionsfeld, die Entwicklung neuer Geschäftsmodelle, die einen kostenlosen Zugang zu medizinischen Informationen gewähren, stellt die für die Printumgebung entwickelten Exklusivrechte auf Verwertung und Verbreitung durch die Verlage in Frage. Damit löst es sich unter dem Schlagwort Open-Access aus dem gegenwärtigen ökonomischen Rahmen. Die beiden wichtigsten Initiativen der Open-Access Community - Open-Access-Zeitschrift und Electronic-Archiving-Repository werden vorgestellt.
