"Das Schicksal eines alt gewordenen Hotelportiers zur Zeit der Jahrhundertwende in Berlin, der degradiert wird und seine ihn mit Stolz erfüllende Uniform mit der eines Toilettenwärters tauschen muss. In Murnaus herausragendem Stummfilmdrama gelingen der "entfesselten" Kamera zwingende Bildsequenzen, die nur sehr sparsamer Zwischentitel bedürfen, um die seelischen Vorgänge deutlich zu machen. Ein positives Ende - der alte Mann beerbt einen in seinen Armen sterbenden Millionär - wurde Murnau aufgezwungen; er inszenierte es mit bewusst ironischer Übertreibung. Nach fast 80 Jahren kommt eine liebevoll und sorgfältig restaurierte Fassung mit neuer Musik zur Aufführung, die der Vision des Regisseurs sogar noch näher kommt als zum Zeitpunkt der Premiere. Das Ergebnis ist einer der glücklichsten Momente in der Restaurationsgeschichte, denn die neue Musik schmiegt sich den Filmszenen wie aus einem Guss an und entzieht sich den Verlockungen einer avancierten Tonsprache, ohne durch kommentierende Klischees zum inhaltsleeren Pasticcio zu verkommen.
