Content: Resulting from a syntactic process, adjectivity refers to the adjectival use of a word. It partly comprises adjectivation, which refers more specifically to the morphological transformation of a word into an adjective. The collected volume offers an overview of this phenomenon in 14 of the many languages in which it can be observed, thus allowing a comparative perspective on the morphosyntactic and semantic functioning of these languages.

Content: Résultat d’un procédé syntaxique, l’adjectivité désigne l’emploi adjectival d’une unité lexicale. Elle recouvre en partie le phénomène de l’adjectivation, qui fait plus spécifiquement référence à la transformation morphologique d’un mot en un adjectif, permise notamment par le mécanisme de la dérivation. L’adjectivité semble toucher de très nombreuses langues ; c’est pourquoi cet ouvrage entend inscrire la question du fonctionnement adjectival dans une perspective plus large que celle de la linguistique française, pour examiner le statut et le fonctionnement de l’adjectivité (voire de l’adjectivation) dans quatorze langues du monde : l’allemand, l’anglais, l’arabe, le chinois, l’espagnol, le finnois, le français, l’hébreu, l’italien, le japonais, le néerlandais, le russe, le suédois ou encore le vietnamien sont autant de langues analysées et comparées dans le présent ouvrage à la lumière de l’adjectivité, plus ou moins teintée, selon les idiomes, du phénomène d’adjectivation. Par-delà la question de l’adjectivité, cet ouvrage de référence offrira au lecteur un regard croisé sur le fonctionnement morphosyntaxique et sémantique de ces langues qui, en dépit de leurs origines parfois très éloignées, présentent à certains égards des similitudes remarquables.
