Goldacre, Mediziner und Kolumnist des "Guardian", hat es sich zur Lebensaufgabe gemacht, mit wissenschaftlichen Scharlatanen gleich welcher Couleur abzurechnen. Sein Buch mit dem etwas schiefen deutschen Titel (im Original besser: "Bad Science") wimmelt von Beispielen, wie "Quacksalber" das Verständnis der Öffentlichkeit von wissenschaftlicher Beweisführung durch Unterschlagung und Banalisierung unvorteilhafter Informationen unterminieren. Auf der Anklagebank sitzen sowohl Homöopathen als auch Big Pharma, sog. Ernährungsberater wie Kosmetikkonzerne, und vor allem auch die Medien mit ihrer "zynischen Verzerrung wissenschaftlicher Belege". Goldacre sieht zwischen den von Profitdenken getriebenen terribles simplificateurs und den Abnehmern durchaus Allianzen: Der Glaube an die Wirksamkeit der Homöopathie z.B. gehorche nicht den Regeln der Vernunft. Mit Lösungsvorschlägen geizt der Autor noch; außer einem Register für klinische Studien verweist er auf seinen Folgeband mit dem Arbeitstitel "Drug company bullshit". Auf jeden Fall ein aufschlussreiches, eloquentes Plädoyer für evidenzbasierte Foschung. (2)
